Classroom Practices and Tips from Cycle II Teachers

  • Have the child ask their neighboring buddies(right and left side) before raising their hand.
  • Use numbers just like at the deli.
  • If the student is disruptive REMOVE him or her from the group, have them REFLECT and after a brief discussion have the student RETURN back to the computer.
  • Have children sit in a group and show them what your expectations are, once done, now have them return to their seats.
  • Pair up students (2 per computer), other students are completing other assignments.
  • Demonstrate the activity on the smartboard before having the students on the computer.
  • Give visual directions rather than long written out directions or long verbal explanations.
  • Show the students what the final project looks like before they attempt to create it themselves.
  • Number the laptops/computers and then assign them by student.
  • Write the students user names and passwords on index cards and have them on hand when on the computers.
  • Show students how to get laptops, unplug them and carry them to their desk.
  • Don’t assume they know how to manipulate them – show them.
  • Have the students stay at the computer and raise a hand for immediate assistance.
  • Use colored cups on the computers. Green = everything is going well, Red = I need help.
  • When the first groups of students are done, promote them to assistant and have them help out the others.
  • Have a parent volunteer or two when you have your computer time.
  • Have the students share the laptops with other teachers or work in other classrooms.
  • Use the timer. It’s available in the GALLERY (in notebook on the Smartboard).
  • When sharing with other colleagues, have a brown bag lunch. Each teachers spends 30-40 minutes showing a new website or tool to other colleagues and share the wealth amongst the staff.
  • When in doubt, ask a colleague- share!!
